WHY I CHOOSE LOW-IMPACT WORKOUTS

This post isn’t to bash any other type of workouts, but to simply explain why low-impact workouts work better for my body. I used to love running and HIIT workouts and honestly thought I had to do those exercises in order to keep weight off…I’ve learned over the years. After doing more research on PCOS and learning what’s best to help tolerate it I found that workouts that reduce stress in your body are best. Examples being; Swimming, Pilates, Walking, Yoga, Strength Training, etc.

I believe in balance when it comes to all things wellness, so I didn’t quit high intensity workouts cold turkey, but I definitely lessened the amount of days I chose to do them. I slowly started to replace spin classes with yoga classes, HIIT workouts with pilates, running with walking. I felt my body become stronger, I wasn’t as hungry from all the cardio, and in general felt more calm. Since I’ve started doing this about 1-2 years ago I’ve also notice my PCOS symptoms have gotten better(regular cycle, less bloating, better sleep).

My body definitely still craves a spin class and when that happens I’ll choose that workout for the day, it’s just not something I’m going to do 4 times a week. I’ve learned that lifting weights is so beneficial for our bodies(especially our metabolism)! Low-impact workouts will help keep our cortisol levels low as opposed to spiking them through the roof with a bunch of cardio multiple times a week which in turn helps our bodies stay more regulated. It takes time to adjust, but once you start to feel the benefits from these types of workouts you’ll end up gravitating towards them more and more.

If you’re feeling burnt out from high intensity workouts I challenge you to try something new. Try a Pilates class, focus on stretching, take a long walk. See what works best for you!
