WHAT UP WITH NUTRITIONAL YEAST?
There's been a lot of hype about nutritional yeast, but what is it and how does it actually benefit us? Nutritional yeast typically comes in a flake or powder form and is made from sugarcane and beet root. It is an inactive yeast so it is safe to eat as is! I enjoy it because it has more of a cheesy flavor which makes it a nice alternative for those who are dairy free. These little yellow flakes reap benefits for our bodies! Nutritional yeast is full of B vitamins and is a complete protein(great for vegetarians!). It also contains minerals such as iron, selenium, and zinc. B vitamins support brain and immune function, fuel our bodies with energy, and aid with red blood cell growth as well as the growth of healthy hair. Selenium helps to lower cholesterol as well as restore cell damage which is helpful for cancer prevention. Iron helps our body receive oxygen through blood flow and vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron so try sprinkling some nutritional yeast on your veggies! A great amount of fiber is also present in this flaky goodness which is helpful for the digestive system. I like sprinkling it on my scrambles or salads, but you can also add it to soups, roasted veggies, pasta, popcorn, or anything you think would taste great with a cheesy flavor! I have found my nutritional yeast at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Sprouts, but take a look in your local grocery store to see if it's offered. Have a feast with nutritional yeast!
